The Advance Savings Credit Union
(ASCU) Story
What About ASCU? Advance Savings Credit Union History ASCU has 6 locations situated in Moncton (2), Petitcodiac, Port Elgin, Riverview and Salisbury. ASCU has over $75 million in assets and provides wise financial solutions to over 7500 owners. In 1962, Co-op Farm Services moved into their new buiding now called Co-op Centre, and Farm Services Credit Union followed suit and leased a part of their new office space. In 1968, the Farm Services Credit Union amalgamated with St. Bernard’s Credit Union and, in 1970, it amalgamated with the Moncton Hospital Credit Union. 1971 became a busy year, with the amalgamation of North River Credit Union with Farm Services Credit Union; the Credit Union applying for a name change to Trico Credit Union Limited; and their charter being changed to allow anyone living in the three counties of Albert, Westmorland or Kent to be members. These changes dictated the requirement to obtain larger office space and as such Trico moved into The Co-operators building in November, 1973. Trico continued its growth and expansion and opened a branch office in The Peoples Park Tower building, located at 960 St. George Blvd. in May, 1976. Further amalgamations took place in 1978 and 1982 as Typo Credit Union and Maple Leaf Credit Union joined forces with Trico. Trico’s membership continued to grow and opportunity for expansion was again found as it opened it’s third branch in Riverview in June, 2000. The following year Scotiabank closed it’s branch in Port Elgin New Brunswick and with the opportunity to grow and help keep a community alive, Trico opened it’s fourth branch in April 2001. All business of Royal Credit Union took place at monthly meetings and the first “office” was not set up until 1953, when the Royal Co-op Store in Fawcett Hill store manager was then allowed to take deposits to the share accounts. In July 1978 office space over the Lounsbury Store in Petitcodiac was acquired and the first paid employee, Jane Duncan, was hired. By 1980 it was apparent that this premise was no longer adequate, as growth in both assets and membership was evident. This was when the move to a Main Street location, formerly the Drug Store, occurred. This move brought on a great growth spurt over the next six years and by 1986 this space was too small for both the membership and the staff. In May 1986 a proposal for a new building was accepted by the Board of Directors, Membership, Credit Union Central of New Brunswick and the Stabilization Board. This was a very major step for the future of Royal Credit Union. Many decisions and long hours went into this effort and by December, 1986, Royal Credit Union was opening its doors to its first “credit union-owned building”, which is the present location on 47 Main Street, Petitcodiac. By early 1987 computers were added to bring the whole business end of Royal Credit Union into a comparable option as a full service financial institution. Opportunity for growth came again when a second branch was added in Salisbury in October 2002. This brought a complete staff total to 17 and a membership total to over 3000! |
