2008 Community Champion The ASCU Community Champion award was designed to honour organizations or individuals within our community who make the world a better place and inspire all of us. Their success is measured by their commitment, desire and zeal for whatever they do. And we’re all enriched as a result. This year’s winner of the ASCU Community Champion award is Monique LeBlanc Gough of Riverview, New Brunswick. In the fall of 2007, Monique started a program called Blankets for the Metro Moncton Homeless. After delivering a bag of coats to the C103 Coats for Kids Campaign, Monique wondered “who else needs warm clothes and blankets when it’s cold out?” She decided to collect blankets and coats that her family no longer needed and also asked a few friends to drop off items. She created a Facebook group to help spread the word about the program. Soon there was radio hype from local radio stations, ads on localmoncton.com, and small blurbs in the newspaper. In the end, she collected over 500 items, which she gave to the YMCA Reconnect Program and the House of Nazareth. For her efforts to help make a difference within the community, we were pleased to present her with an award and a $500 cheque to the charity of her choice at our Annual General Meeting on April 22nd.
