COMMUNITY CHAMPION AWARDED |

Monique LeBlanc Gough, winner of ASCU’s
Community
Champion
award and her daughter, Amber |
Advance Savings Credit Union recognizes that there are many individuals and
organizations that make our communities a better place to live and work. Because of this, we
introduced the Advance Savings Credit Union Community Champion Award. The award was
designed to honour an individual or an organization within our communities who make our world
a better place. They exhibit spirit by channeling their commitment, desire, and zeal into actions.
They inspire us and we are all enriched as a result.
The first annual Advance Savings Credit Union Community Champion Award was presented to
Monique LeBlanc Gough of Riverview at the ASCU Annual General Meeting at Future Inns on
April 22nd.
“We received several worthy nominations,” says Janice Rice, COO of Advance Savings Credit
Union, “but it became clear to the selection committee that Monique’s selfless thinking and
actions in creating the Blankets for the Metro Moncton Homeless program truly captured the
spirit of the Community Champion Award. We are pleased to present this award to such a
deserving individual.”
In the fall of 2007, Monique started Blankets for the Metro Moncton Homeless, a program
designed to provide warm blankets and clothing for the homeless in our community. After
Monique and her four year old daughter, Amber, cleaned out their closets and brought a garbage
bag full of coats to a local radio station for the Coats for Kids Campaign, Monique wondered
“who else needs warm clothes and blankets when it’s cold out”? She decided to go back home
and collect blankets and extra adult winter clothing that her family no longer needed. She also
asked a few friends to drop off some items they were no longer using. In the end, by spreading
the word about the program through various media sources, her daughter’s playroom overflowed with over 500 items, which she gave to the YMCA Reconnect Program and the House of the
Nazareth. Her goal is to make this an annual campaign.
“My daughter Amber and I were extremely honoured to be chosen as the Advance Savings Credit
Union Community Champion for 2008,” says Monique. “Being able to donate mounds of
blankets and clothing to help so many people at such a cold time of year warmed our hearts. I
encourage everyone to clean out their closets and set everything aside to donate for this coming
fall. I am hoping the exposure will allow us to help many organizations, such as the YMCA
Reconnect Street Intervention Program, along with as many homeless individuals as possible for
fall/winter 2008.”
