ASCU News
Cathy Darland, branch manager of ASCU Peoples Park Tower, recently presented a cheque for $1000 to Mike Belong, principal of Hillcrest Elementary School for the newly created Advance Savings Credit Union Literacy Program. This new initiative that was recently launched at Hillcrest Elementary School involves a financial commitment from ASCU PPT of $1000 per school year, which will be used to fund the books needed for this project. “The program will be a great asset to our school as research tells us that we need hundreds of books in each and every classroom,” says Belong. “The libraries in our schools are in desperate need of being updated and because the money is minimal it's too difficult to adequately supply one let alone both. We have numerous families in our school that simply cannot afford to buy books as they are very expensive. Having said that, for our students in all of our classes to be able to have the opportunity to receive their own books is indeed a big deal. We sincerely thank Advance Savings for their care and thoughtfulness and look forward to our exciting new monthly program!” The program is a literacy based rewards program whereby the students of Hillcrest are encouraged to improve their literacy skills, no matter what level they are presently at, in such things as reading, writing, poetry, acting, etc. During a monthly awards assembly, Cathy Darland presents books to one student from each of the school’s 13 classes. The recipients of the books are chosen by the teachers. Each student is also given a book for their class, so as to increase their supply of new reading material. |
